The central government has said that 21 states and Union Territories are actively conducting press briefings to counter misinformation surrounding the availability of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). The move comes amid rising concerns over panic buying and rumours of shortages triggered by global supply disruptions.
According to officials, the initiative is part of a coordinated effort to ensure that citizens receive accurate and timely information regarding fuel availability, thereby preventing unnecessary panic and hoarding.
Misinformation Triggering Panic Buying
Authorities have observed that false claims about LPG shortages have led to panic among consumers in several regions. This has resulted in increased bookings and stockpiling, which can disrupt normal supply chains.
The Centre has termed such claims as misleading and emphasized that fuel supplies remain stable and under control, urging citizens not to rely on unverified information.
Officials highlighted that misinformation, especially on social media, is one of the key drivers behind sudden spikes in demand, which can create artificial shortages.
States Directed to Increase Communication
The Centre has instructed all states and Union Territories to conduct regular press briefings, awareness campaigns, and public outreach programs to reassure citizens about LPG availability.
These briefings are aimed at:
- Providing real-time updates on supply
- Clarifying rumours and false narratives
- Encouraging responsible consumption
Earlier, only a limited number of states were conducting such briefings, prompting the Centre to push for wider participation across the country.
The government stressed that proactive communication is essential to maintaining public confidence and ensuring smooth distribution.
Focus on Preventing Hoarding and Black Marketing
In addition to countering misinformation, the Centre has also directed states to take strict action against hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders.
Authorities have been asked to:
- Conduct inspections and raids where necessary
- Monitor supply chains closely
- Take legal action against offenders
The aim is to ensure that LPG reaches genuine consumers without disruption and that no artificial scarcity is created due to illegal practices.
Energy Situation Remains Stable
Despite global challenges, including disruptions in oil supply routes, the government has assured that India has adequate fuel reserves and a robust distribution system in place.
Officials reiterated that there is no immediate shortage of LPG, and supply chains are functioning smoothly across most parts of the country. Citizens have been advised to avoid panic booking and to rely only on official updates.
Wider Measures to Manage Supply
The Centre has also taken several additional steps to ensure uninterrupted LPG availability, including:
- Increasing allocation of commercial LPG to states
- Encouraging the use of alternative fuels like piped natural gas (PNG)
- Prioritizing essential sectors and vulnerable consumers
These measures are aimed at maintaining a balance between demand and supply during challenging times.
