Chandigarh: On April 26, 2025, the bustling Sabji Mandi in Sector 40, Chandigarh, became the stage for a quiet revolution. Armed with 600 cloth shopping bags and a simple yet message-powerful “Plastic bag? Not in my hand!”-I, along with 15 enthusiastic children and supportive neighbours, set out to challenge our community’s reliance on plastic. The result was a resounding success, not just in numbers but in the spark of change it ignited. Plastic bags, cheap and convenient, have become a scourge on our environment. They clog drains, litter streets, and choke wildlife, persisting in landfills for centuries. In a country like India, where millions of plastic bags are used daily, the need for action is urgent. Our campaign aimed to address this head-on by offering shoppers a sustainable alternative: reusable cloth bags. Over 600 were distributed, each one a small but tangible step toward reducing plastic waste.
But the campaign was about more than just bags. It was about shifting mindsets. We invited shoppers to take a pledge to go plastic-free, and 493 individuals stepped forward, committing to reject plastic bags and inspire their families and friends to do the same.
This ripple effect is where the true potential of our initiative lies each pledge has the power to influence entire households, creating a wave of sustainable choices. What made this campaign possible was the strength of community. Over the past month, generous donations from local residents funded the production of the cloth. bags. To ensure our efforts uplifted the community in more ways than one, I partnered with Samvedana, a local NGO that empowers marginalized women.
The bags we distributed were crafted by these women, providing them with meaningful employment and reinforcing the idea that sustainability and social good can go hand in hand.
The enthusiasm of the 15 children who joined me was a reminder of the power of youth in driving change. Their energy and conviction inspired shoppers and proved that environmental activism knows no age limit.
Together, we didn’t just distribute bags; we sparked conversations, challenged habits, and planted seeds for a greener future. The Sabji Mandi campaign is a blueprint for what’s possible when a community unites for a common. cause. Chandigarh, with its vibrant neighbourhoods and engaged residents, is uniquely positioned to lead the charge against plastic pollution. But this is just the beginning.
To sustain this momentum, we need more such initiatives- more cloth bags, more pledges, and more partnerships that empower both people and the planet.
As I reflect on the day, I’m filled with hope. The sight of shoppers walking away with cloth bags slung over their shoulders, the sound of children chanting our slogan, and the knowledge that nearly 500 people have vowed to make a difference are signs of a community ready to act. Together, we can make Chandigarh a model of sustainability, proving that small actions, when multiplied, can transform our world. Let’s keep saying no to plastic bags and yes to a cleaner, greener tomorrow.
