Today, 8th November, is a landmark day. Respected L.K. Advani Ji enters his hundredth year. On this special occasion, my greetings to him.
I’ve written an article in which I’ve highlighted his everlasting contribution to India.
I have recalled his journey, be it experiencing the horrors of Partition and rebuilding life from scratch, strengthening the Jana Sangh and building the BJP, standing up for democracy during the Emergency, leading the Somnath to Ayodhya Rath Yatra or serving the nation in government.
Have also written about other aspects of Advani Ji – the voracious reader, his love for culture and cinema, a prolific writer and more.

Advani turns 100 on Diwali
Prime Minister Modi noted in his article that Advani’s birthday this year falls on Diwali, a festival associated with Lord Shri Ram and the tradition of lighting lamps. He also linked the occasion to several important milestones in the history of Indian politics and organizations. These included the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, and the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
PM Modi explained that LK Advani was born on November 8, 1927, the day of Dev Deepawali. During the partition of India in 1947, he had to leave his home and familiar surroundings in Sindh. He was young at the time.
The Prime Minister said that Advani started his life afresh without any bitterness. This patience and struggle were evident throughout his political career. He played a key role in strengthening the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and later the BJP.
Fought to protect democracy and the Constitution during the Emergency
PM Modi praised Advani’s ideological clarity and intellectual ability, saying that these were reflected in his speeches, articles, interviews, and political contributions. He nurtured generations of party workers and laid a strong foundation for the organization based on the principle of ‘nation first.’
Recalling Advani’s long political association with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Modi said that the partnership between the two leaders is an extraordinary example in Indian politics.
He wrote, “There are very few examples in history where two prominent political leaders have worked together for decades without becoming rivals. Advani ji and Atal ji set a shining example. Together, they changed the course of Indian politics.”
The Prime Minister also mentioned Advani’s role in strengthening the party organization in Delhi. He explained that Advani was elected President of the Delhi Metropolitan Council in 1967 and began his parliamentary career in 1970. He subsequently served the country as a Member of Parliament, Leader of the Opposition, and Union Minister.
Shared an anecdote from the 1991 elections
PM Modi also shared a personal memory from the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. He explained that at that time, he had helped Advani prepare his election documents and also supported his election campaign in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
He said that Advani had a deep connection with Gandhinagar, and the voters there had repeatedly reposed their trust in him.
The Prime Minister described the 1975 Emergency as a turning point in Advani’s life. He said that during that time, Advani fought to protect democracy and the Constitution. Modi also mentioned his book, “A Prisoner’s Scrap-Book.”
Somnath-Ayodhya Rath Yatra described as a historic milestone
PM Modi praised Advani’s work as Information and Broadcasting Minister in the Janata Party government and his contributions later as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. He said that Advani played a key role in strengthening the country’s security system and improving the conditions of security forces personnel.
The Prime Minister described the Rath Yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya as a historic milestone in Advani’s political career. He said that he was fortunate to be a part of this journey, from its planning to its completion.
Modi wrote that Advani demonstrated the strong will and endurance required for this long journey.
Simplicity, love for reading and cinema were also mentioned
The Prime Minister also recalled Advani’s simple nature, honesty, and personal interests. He recalled that Advani once stayed in Junagadh for a whole month as a common worker to strengthen the party organization before the assembly elections.
Modi described him as a voracious reader, interested in cinema and theater, and a film critic.
He also recalled the contributions of Advani’s wife, Kamla Advani. PM Modi said that Kamla Advani was his public figure.
