A tragic road accident in Ambala Cantonment, Haryana, claimed the life of a 24-year-old woman late Wednesday night after a speeding car, allegedly driven by a drunk policeman, rammed into an e-rickshaw and ran over her.
The accused officer, identified as Amit Kumar, an EHC posted at Baldev Nagar police post, has been taken into custody. The incident triggered chaos at the hospital, with the victim’s family demanding strict action and a fair medical examination of the accused.
Car Hits E-Rickshaw Near Kali Paltan Bridge
According to reports, the accident occurred near the Kali Paltan bridge when Amit Kumar was driving his Honda City from Cantonment towards the city.
At the same time, Nikita Bajaj (24) was returning home to Kartar Nagar from the Cantonment railway station with her brother Harsh in an e-rickshaw. She had come from Gurugram to attend a wedding. There were four passengers in the e-rickshaw.
The speeding car allegedly struck the e-rickshaw from behind.
Car Wheel Ran Over Nikita
Following the impact, Nikita fell onto the road. Eyewitnesses, including e-rickshaw driver Rajendra, claimed that the car ran over her.
Family members and passengers alleged that the policeman driving the vehicle appeared to be intoxicated. Angry locals caught the accused at the spot and reportedly thrashed him before police arrived.
Nikita was rushed to a trauma center, where doctors declared her dead.
Victim’s Background
Nikita Bajaj was a resident of Kartar Nagar in Ambala City. After completing an air hostess course, she had been working at Max International in Gurugram.
According to her family, she had recently shifted to Ambala. The family was celebrating a wedding when the tragic accident cast a shadow of grief over the household.
Chaos at Hospital, Gates Closed
After news of Nikita’s death spread, a large number of family members and local residents gathered at the hospital, demanding justice.
As tensions escalated, police reportedly closed the hospital gates and deployed additional personnel to control the situation. The body was later shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Family Alleges Attempt to Shield Accused
The victim’s family has accused the police of trying to protect the accused officer. They have demanded a transparent and impartial medical examination to confirm whether the policeman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
The accused officer was reportedly kept in a separate room at the hospital, and media entry was restricted during the commotion.
Car Insurance Had Expired
Rajendra, in-charge of the Lalkurti police post, confirmed that Amit Kumar has been taken into custody and that legal proceedings are underway based on the family’s statements.
Preliminary investigation has also revealed that the insurance of the car involved in the accident had expired in March 2024.
Police have stated that further action will be taken after the post-mortem report and medical examination results are received. The investigation is ongoing.
