New Delhi: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant on Monday condemned the alleged attack on Independent MP Pappu Yadav, calling it a serious security lapse and accusing the Union Home Ministry of failing to provide adequate protection to the Purnia MP.
Sawant calls incident a serious failure
Speaking to ANI, Sawant said, “What happened with Pappu Yadav is a very serious matter. This is another example that the Home Ministry has failed.”
His remarks came a day after a scuffle broke out at Pappu Yadav’s residence in Delhi, where one man allegedly threw a slipper at the MP while another reportedly brandished a knife during a press conference.
Pappu Yadav alleges assassination attempt
Following the incident, Pappu Yadav claimed that the attack was an attempt on his life and alleged that a bounty had been announced against him.
“Babas are saying every day, ‘Kill me, burn me down; we will give ₹51 lakh.’ We caught him and handed him over to the police. There was a plot to kill me, but I survived,” he said.
Delhi Police identified the two accused as Sumit Sharma and Happy Sharma. One of the accused has been detained at Tilak Marg Police Station.
According to police sources, Sumit Sharma’s medico-legal examination confirmed that he was heavily intoxicated during the incident, while investigators are verifying the role of Happy Sharma, who allegedly threw a slipper at the MP.
Attack follows Ram Mandir skit controversy
The incident comes days after Opposition MPs staged a satirical skit inside the Parliament complex over alleged irregularities in Ram Mandir donations.
During the performance, Pappu Yadav dressed as a temple priest while other Opposition MPs enacted scenes involving a donation box and allegations of corruption.
The skit drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, with several party members, including Bansuri Swaraj, filing police complaints alleging that it hurt religious sentiments.
Despite the controversy, Pappu Yadav has defended the performance, maintaining that raising questions related to the Ram Mandir and the sentiments of the Hindu community should not be considered objectionable.
