New Delhi: Indian Army athletes achieved their best-ever performance at the Asian Games 2026, winning a total of 20 medals. Army athletes won 6 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals in the competition. This performance by 62 Army athletes, who participated in 15 sports, significantly contributed to India’s overall medal tally. India secured fourth place in the competition.
According to an official release, the Army athletes’ six gold medals represent a 100 percent increase over their gold medal tally at the 2022 Asian Games. Army athletes won 20 of India’s total 85 medals, representing 23.52 percent of the total. Of India’s 21 gold medals, six were won by Army athletes, representing approximately 29 percent of the total.
The Army’s Strong Sports System to Nurture Talent
The Indian Army’s sports system, developed over the years, plays a key role in this achievement. Under this system, talented athletes are identified and provided with disciplined and systematic training to develop their potential.
Following this, athletes are trained in specialized training centers for various sports. Here, they are provided with modern facilities, expert coaching, technical and scientific support, necessary equipment, opportunities to participate in competitions, and constant encouragement.
The Army’s objective is not only to identify talent but also to provide them with the environment and support they need to transform their potential into superior performance and compete at the international level.
The Indian Army has a long tradition of excellence in sports. Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand is a prominent symbol of this legacy. In recent years, athletes like Lieutenant Colonel Neeraj Chopra have also achieved high positions in international athletics, bringing global recognition to Indian sports.
The Vision of ‘Vijay’ and the Role of the ‘Sporting Warrior’
The success of Army athletes at the Asian Games 2026 is also linked to the Army Chief’s ‘VIJAY’ vision, which places the warrior at the center of change. The ‘Sporting Warrior’ embodies the same spirit of discipline, perseverance, determination, and relentless pursuit of victory that defines a soldier.
These achievements reflect the Army’s commitment to fostering talent and transforming their individual potential into national pride. Beyond medals, each Sporting Warrior represents the nation’s hopes. The playing field may change, but the spirit of the warrior remains.
Participation of Army athletes also increased
The participation of Army athletes in the Indian contingent at the Asian Games 2026 also increased. This time, the share of Army athletes in the Indian contingent was 12.6 percent, compared to 9 percent in 2022.
Nine women were among the 62 Army athletes. Women athletes won two gold and one silver medals. They contributed 15 percent of the Army’s total medals and 33 percent of its total gold medals.
The Army athletes’ participation-to-medal ratio was 32 percent, meaning that approximately every three athletes participating in the competition won a medal.

Non-Resident Subedar Neeru Dhanda and NB Subedar Gulvir Singh were among the Army’s outstanding performers. Neeru Dhanda won two gold and one silver medal, while Gulvir Singh won two silver and one bronze medal.
