Assam: As part of the ongoing crackdown against illegal medical practice, Assam Police have arrested another man in Cachar district for allegedly providing medical services based on fake qualifications. Police officials announced this on Monday. The accused has been identified as Shamim Ahmed Laskar, a resident of Bhaga area under the Dholai police station jurisdiction. He is accused of running a clinic without valid medical qualifications.
Raid on medical chamber, fake certificates recovered
According to police, the arrest was made following a written complaint by Dr. Abhijit Neog, Anti-Quackery and Vigilance Officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration (ACMR). Based on the complaint, a police team raided the accused’s medical chamber on Saturday and detained him on the spot. During the search, several fake MBBS certificates and other related documents were recovered.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Shamim Ahmed Laskar had been practicing medicine illegally for a long time, misleading patients and posing a serious threat to public health and safety. Police officials stated that the accused could not produce any valid registration or permit to practice medicine.
Network Investigation, More Arrests Possible
The seized documents have been sent for further examination, and a detailed investigation has been launched to determine how long the accused has been engaged in this illegal activity and whether any patients have been harmed by his unauthorized treatment. Investigators are also probing whether a larger network is involved in the creation and dissemination of fake medical certificates. Officials stated that further arrests cannot be ruled out.
It is worth noting that over the past few months, the Assam Police has intensified its campaign against quacks and unqualified doctors in Cachar district. So far, around 20 people posing as doctors have been arrested in various areas of the district as part of this campaign. Authorities have urged the public to check the qualifications of any doctor before seeking treatment from them and to report any suspicious activity to the police or ACMR to prevent the dangers of unqualified medical practice.
