Bengaluru: Three men have been detained by Bengaluru Police for allegedly killing a stray dog near Greenwood High School in Gunjur, Varthur. The incident took place on October 20.
The accused have been identified as Muniyappa, Murali and Puneeth, all residents of Bengaluru. Police registered a case after an animal welfare activist filed a complaint.
According to the complaint, the three men allegedly hung the dog from a tree and beat it with a thick stick until it died. CCTV cameras reportedly captured the incident.
The case came to light after footage of the incident surfaced on social media. It led to widespread anger over the treatment of the animal, with the complainant asking police to take strict action against those involved.
Police have registered an FIR under Section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The three men have been detained for questioning, and the investigation is ongoing.
The Bengaluru Police Commissionerate also confirmed that action had been initiated in the case. In a public statement, it said, “Bengaluru City Police has taken cognisance of the incident, and necessary legal action has been initiated.”
Police also reiterated that cruelty to animals would not be tolerated.
Earlier Case of Animal Cruelty in Bengaluru
This is not the first case of alleged cruelty to stray dogs reported in Bengaluru. In February 2022, a 23-year-old man named Adi Narayana was arrested for allegedly driving his luxury car over stray dogs sleeping on a footpath in Jayanagar.
The incident took place on the evening of January 26, 2022, on 10th B Main Road in Jayanagar’s first block. Animal rights activists brought the matter to the police, and a former corporator filed a complaint on January 29.
After checking CCTV footage, police arrested Narayana and booked him under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Section 428 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The section dealt with mischief involving the killing, poisoning, maiming or rendering useless of animals.
The latest incident has once again raised concerns about cruelty towards stray animals and the need for action against those accused of such acts.
