Punjab village gives Best Mother-in-law awards

In a unique initiative aimed at promoting harmony within families, the panchayat of Balloh village in Punjab’s Bathinda district honoured six elderly women with the “Best Mother-in-law Award.” The awards were presented during a special function organised to mark International Women’s Day, celebrating women who have fostered loving relationships within their families.

The event was organised by the village panchayat under the leadership of Sarpanch Amarjit Kaur, who said the idea behind the award was to recognise mothers-in-law who have maintained warm and respectful bonds with their daughters-in-law. According to the organisers, the initiative aims to transform the traditional perception of the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship into one based on affection and mutual respect.

Village residents and local leaders gathered at the event to celebrate the award recipients and appreciate their role in strengthening family values.

Encouraging positive family relationships

The organisers explained that the award was designed to highlight positive examples within families. In many households, the relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is often stereotyped as conflict-ridden. Through this initiative, the panchayat wanted to challenge that notion and showcase families where this relationship resembles a mother-daughter bond.

Sarpanch Amarjit Kaur said the awards were given to women who had shown kindness, understanding and support toward their daughters-in-law. The aim was not only to recognise their contribution but also to inspire others in the community to build stronger and healthier family relationships.

Local residents praised the initiative, saying it highlighted the importance of respect, communication and empathy in maintaining harmony within joint families, which remain common in rural Punjab.

Selection of awardees

The six women were selected by the village panchayat after consultations with community members. The selection process considered how the women treated their daughters-in-law, their contribution to family unity and their role in promoting a peaceful household environment.

According to village representatives, these women had earned admiration in their communities for nurturing supportive family relationships and guiding younger generations with patience and care.

During the ceremony, the recipients were felicitated with shawls and appreciation certificates. Community members applauded their efforts and expressed hope that the recognition would encourage more families to cultivate positive relationships at home.

Message of women’s empowerment

Apart from honouring the six women, the event also served as a platform to celebrate the broader role of women in society. Panchayat members said that strong families form the foundation of a strong community, and women play a key role in maintaining this social fabric.

The initiative also reflected a growing effort in rural areas to recognise women’s contributions beyond traditional roles. By honouring mothers-in-law who promote equality and respect in families, the panchayat hoped to encourage a culture of appreciation for women’s efforts.

Community leaders added that similar programmes could be organised in other villages to highlight positive social values and promote mutual respect among family members.

A model for other villages

Residents said the initiative by the Balloh panchayat could serve as a model for other villages across Punjab and beyond. By publicly recognising women who nurture harmonious families, the programme aims to encourage a shift in attitudes and strengthen relationships within households.

The event concluded with cultural activities and discussions on women’s empowerment, emphasising the importance of compassion and unity within families.

Local leaders expressed hope that the award would become an annual tradition, continuing to honour women who play a vital role in maintaining harmony and strengthening family bonds in the community.
