Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent video message on forgiving students who used abusive language during the Jantar Mantar protests, saying there are “two Generation Zs” in India with vastly different realities.
In a post on X, Mufti said that while one section of India’s youth has inherited opportunities, young people in Kashmir have grown up amid curfews, internet shutdowns, unemployment and trauma.
‘Kashmiri Youth Need Dignity, Not Sympathy’
Addressing the Prime Minister, Mehbooba Mufti wrote that Kashmiri youth do not seek sympathy or charity but want dignity, equal opportunities, political space and the freedom to pursue their aspirations without fear.
She said that if compassion is to shape India’s future, it should begin with addressing the concerns and aspirations of the youth in Kashmir.
PM Modi Calls for Forgiveness and Guidance
Mufti’s remarks came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a video message in which he appealed for compassion towards students who had allegedly used abusive language against him during the recent protests at Jantar Mantar.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that both he and his late mother were subjected to offensive remarks but said young people often make mistakes and deserve an opportunity to correct them rather than face lifelong punishment.
He urged society to guide such students instead of dragging them into prolonged legal proceedings or social ostracism, saying they should be shown the right path.
Political Debate Continues
The Prime Minister’s remarks have triggered political reactions across party lines. While BJP leaders praised his decision to forgive the students as an example of compassionate leadership, opposition leaders have responded by raising broader issues concerning governance and opportunities for the country’s youth.
Mehbooba Mufti’s response adds to the ongoing political debate over youth, public dissent and the challenges faced by different sections of society.
