The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged protests in Amritsar, targeting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over deteriorating law and order and rising concerns around sacrilege incidents in Punjab. Party leaders and workers raised slogans against the state government, accusing it of failing to ensure public safety.
Anger Over Sacrilege Incidents
The protest also reflected growing anger over sacrilege (beadbi) cases, which remain a sensitive issue in Punjab politics. The AAP government has recently proposed stricter laws, including punishment ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment for such offenses, but opposition parties argue implementation remains weak.
Chandigarh Blast Sparks Political Tension
The BJP intensified its attack following a blast outside the party’s office in Chandigarh, linking it to what it called a worsening security situation. Leaders alleged that repeated violent incidents—including blasts and attacks—indicate a serious breakdown of governance. The explosion, which damaged vehicles but caused no casualties, is currently under investigation, with central agencies also involved.
BJP to Corner Government on Law & Order
BJP leaders have announced plans to escalate the issue and corner the AAP government politically, both inside and outside the Assembly.
They claim Punjab has witnessed the following:
- Rising gangster activity
- Repeated attacks and blasts
- Weak policing and intelligence failures
AAP Responds Amid Blame Game
The controversy has triggered a political blame game, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann maintaining that certain incidents—like the Chandigarh blast—fall under central jurisdiction since the city is a Union Territory.
