Chandigarh: The BJP is steadily expanding its membership in Punjab ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini today inducted former Congress MP Jagmeet Brar into the BJP at the Chandigarh BJP office. Onkar Sidhu, former OSD to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and senior Akali leader Charanjit Brar also joined the party.
Additionally, Ripjit Singh Brar, brother of Jagmeet Brar, former MLA from Kotkapura, also joined the BJP. Jagmeet Brar contested the 2022 Maur Mandi Assembly elections on a Akali Dal ticket. Through these leaders, the BJP is seeking to expand its vote bank in Punjab’s Malwa region, which accounts for more than half of the assembly seats.
Punjab BJP President Comments on Expansion
On this occasion, Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar said, “Today the BJP Punjab family has expanded. The personalities who have joined need no introduction. These four have left their mark on the hearts of the people. People in Punjab are worried today. No one is safe. People are looking to the BJP with hope.”
He said that the BJP is the only party that can manage the state properly in its current state. Even the Chief Minister’s post is now mortgaged.
Malwa Region: BJP’s Strategic Focus
Through the entry of these leaders into the party, the BJP is targeting the Malwa region of Punjab. Jagmeet Brar, his brother Ripjit Brar, and Charanjit Brar all hail from Muktsar in the Malwa region. Of Punjab’s 117 assembly seats, the Malwa region has 69 seats. This is where the path to forming a government opens. For this reason, the BJP is strengthening its base here.
