BRO sets Rs 17,900 crore target for border infrastructure in FY26

New Delhi: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) achieved its highest-ever expenditure of Rs 16,690 crore in FY 2024–25 on the construction and maintenance of strategic roads, bridges, tunnels and airfields across the country. According to an official statement issued on Monday, the organisation aims to maintain this growth trajectory with a targeted outlay of Rs 17,900 crore for FY 2025–26.

Infrastructure boost across border and remote regions

BRO currently manages 18 field projects across 11 states and three Union Territories, spanning North West India, the Northeast and Eastern India, as well as Bhutan. These projects focus on building and upgrading critical infrastructure in border and inaccessible areas to meet both military and civilian requirements, while also supporting socio-economic development through initiatives such as the Act East policy and the Vibrant Villages Programme.

Key projects in Arunachal, Ladakh and Northeast

In Arunachal Pradesh, BRO projects including Vartak, Arunank, Udayak and Brahmank are improving connectivity to remote villages and the Line of Actual Control through key structures like the Sela and Nechiphu tunnels and major bridges. In Ladakh, projects such as Himank and Beacon maintain vital routes including the Srinagar–Leh highway, the Darbuk–Shyok–DBO road and the Atal Tunnel, while work continues on the Shinku La Tunnel to ensure all-weather connectivity. In the Northeast, BRO projects in Sikkim, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur are strengthening regional access and strategic mobility, reinforcing national security and regional development.
