A second-year BTech student tragically died by suicide after jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel building in the Knowledge Park-3 area of Greater Noida late Friday night. The police confirmed the identity of the deceased as Udit Soni, a resident of Jhansi district who was studying engineering at a local institution. Authorities rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, senior officials said.
Incident Details and Hosteller’s Return
According to police, Soni had returned to his hostel on Friday night with two friends after allegedly consuming alcohol. The hostel authorities reportedly reprimanded him for violating hostel rules and shared a video of the incident with his father, Vijay Soni. The father then called his son and scolded him over the matter, warning that he might bring him home from the hostel.
Distressed by this confrontation, Soni is believed to have climbed to the fourth-floor rooftop of the hostel and jumped, senior police officials said. The exact circumstances leading to his decision are still being investigated, and police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
Investigation Underway
Greater Noida Police are probing the case to determine whether any additional factors contributed to the tragic decision. Two people have been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation, authorities said. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, which will help establish the precise cause of death and provide further clarity on the events that led up to it.
Officials have stressed that the investigation will examine all possibilities, including the role of alcohol, emotional distress, and any other pressures faced by the student in the days preceding the incident. Police are also recording statements from witnesses and hostel staff as part of the probe.
Wider Concerns Over Student Well-Being
This tragic incident has once again raised concerns about student mental health and well-being, particularly in high-pressure academic environments. Experts and educators have repeatedly urged colleges and hostel administrations to provide better support systems, counselling services, and mechanisms to help distressed students cope with stress and emotional challenges.
Student suicides have been an ongoing concern across educational institutions, prompting calls for stronger mental health awareness, peer support networks, and timely intervention by authorities and families when warning signs emerge.
Family and Community Reaction
Family members of the deceased were present at the site following the incident and are cooperating with police investigations. The community has expressed shock and sadness at the sudden loss of a young life, highlighting the importance of empathy and support for young students navigating academic and personal pressures
