Centre Withdraws Order to Restructure Panjab University Senate, Says MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney

Chandigarh: The Centre has withdrawn its decision to restructure the 59-year-old Senate of Panjab University, which had proposed reducing the number of members from 91 to 31, Member of Parliament Vikramjit Singh Sahney said on Tuesday.

Taking to social media, Sahney welcomed the move, saying, “Centre has rightly rescinded its order to restructure 59-year-old Senate of Punjab University by bringing down members to 31 from 91. Good sense has prevailed.”

He emphasised that while reforms are necessary, the representation of alumni and Punjabi stakeholders must remain central to the university’s governance.

“While reforms are important, alumni and Punjabi representation must remain central. Punjab is a key stakeholder; its voice must be heard,” Sahney added, tagging the Punjab government, Union Education Ministry, and major media outlets.

Political Chaos Across State

The Centre’s earlier restructuring proposal had sparked criticism from political and academic circles in Punjab, who viewed it as an attempt to dilute the state’s influence over the historic institution.

With this latest decision, the status quo of the Panjab University Senate is expected to continue, ensuring broader participation and representation from Punjab.
