Chandigarh: The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) Chandigarh will open a dedicated emergency room for heart patients starting March 1, 2026. This move addresses a long-standing need since the Advanced Cardiac Center was established in 2009.
Need for a Separate Facility
Until now, critical heart patients, including those suffering from heart attacks, were treated in the main emergency wing. PGI receives a large number of patients from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan, making timely treatment in the overcrowded emergency system challenging.
Timely Treatment Can Save Lives
PGI Director Professor Vivek Lal emphasised that every minute counts during heart-related emergencies. The new cardiac emergency room will ensure that patients receive immediate treatment without delays, potentially saving lives.
Collaborative Effort
The facility was established through joint efforts by the departments of Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, Hospital Administration, and Nursing. The new system will reduce delays, ensure clear accountability, ease the burden on the main emergency room, and provide better services to patients and their families.
