When news of the theft of offerings at the grand Shri Ram Temple at Shri Ram Janmabhoomi surfaced, it shocked every devout person in India and abroad. Uttar Pradesh immediately appointed an SIT and submitted its first and later final reports to the Supreme Court in the form of a status report. The Supreme Court also appointed its own SIT, whose report has just been released. It was not agreed that the investigation into the theft of offerings be handed over to the CBI, but a separate CEO was appointed to oversee the temple’s operations and control the offerings, reporting to the temple trust’s general secretary. Former general secretaries Champat Rai and Anil Mishra were removed. Currently, retired Air Marshal Jitendra Mishra is the CEO. Eight accused have been arrested so far in the offering theft case. They are Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Manish Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Ramshankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava, and Ramshankar Yadav. The list of offering thieves includes those who count the offerings. So far, ₹79.85 lakh has been recovered in raids. Ultimately, the Supreme Court was informed that the total number of offering thefts was 105, not 70. This revelation, aided by CCTV footage, further clarifies the negligence in offering counting. Now, the accused have been arrested, but charge sheets have not been filed against them in the case. The Indian Penal Code stipulates that if a charge sheet is not filed within 90 days of arrest, the accused will be entitled to bail. To prevent this from happening, the government filed the charge sheet before September 25th, when the 90-day limit was to expire. However, some questions have arisen since the filing of this charge sheet: whether the investigation committee collected any concrete evidence beyond CCTV footage within 90 days, or whether the lack of concrete evidence could have led to a flaw. We also believe that investigation and vigilance should not be limited to just one holy temple, but should be maintained in all major holy temples and religious places. Following this incident, similar complaints were received from several other temples as well. Theft of offerings is an unforgivable crime that cannot be tolerated under any circumstances, as it amounts to the murder of the faith of devotees.
