Kolkata: The West Bengal government is set to present a report to the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday regarding the recent clashes in Beldanga, Murshidabad district, which occurred on the night of November 16. This report will detail the incidents that led to the unrest, the triggering factors, and the police’s response to restore order in the area.
The Court requested this report following a public interest litigation (PIL) that called for the deployment of Central Armed Forces in Beldanga and proposed that the investigation be transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Since the clashes, a political debate has emerged between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP. BJP’s state president and Union Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar, has alleged that the violence targeted a specific community and likened the situation to events in neighboring Bangladesh. He criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also oversees the police, for her perceived inaction against such issues.
In response, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh acknowledged the clashes but emphasized that the situation was quickly brought under control due to the effective intervention of police in collaboration with the local community. He accused certain “evil forces” of attempting to incite further unrest and create confusion, asserting that these elements were responsible for the disturbances. Ghosh insisted that peace has since been restored in Beldanga.
