Delhi police released Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa

Ladakh’s Member of Parliament, Mohmad Haneefa, confirmed that he has been released by the Delhi police. Haneefa was taken into custody on Tuesday, shortly after over a hundred protesters from Ladakh, including climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, were detained at the Delhi-Haryana border.

Haneefa said to ANI, “Some of our leaders and I were released today, and we will be taken to our hotels.” He expressed hope that Sonam Wangchuk would also be released shortly, stating, “We have communicated with the officers, and some of our people have been let go. We hope for Sonam Wangchuk’s release soon as well. The process is ongoing, and we hope to head to Rajghat tomorrow.”

Wangchuk and his supporters were arrested while marching from Leh to Delhi to call for constitutional protections for Ladakh. The march started on September 1 and was intended to finish at Rajghat on October 2, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

“We plan to meet with the Ministry of Home Affairs to discuss our visit to Rajghat. We are hopeful for a positive response from the MHA. We were detained and kept at the police guest house, and the arrest of Sonam Wangchuk is quite unfortunate. There appears to be a clear motive behind this action. We intend to meet with Sonam Wangchuk, who, along with some female members, is on hunger strike,” Haneefa added.

In the meantime, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court contesting Wangchuk’s detention. The petition seeks the release of members of the Kargil Democratic Alliance and others connected to it who were detained at Singhu Border, along with the cancellation of the prohibitory order from September 30, 2024, which presumably led to their arrests. Wangchuk and around 120 others from Ladakh were detained on the night of September 30, 2024.

The march was organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) in coordination with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), both of which have been leading protests for four years. Additionally, another petition has been submitted to the Delhi High Court, requesting permission for the petitioner and others to peacefully enter Delhi for an environmental awareness march scheduled to conclude at Rajghat on October 2, 2024.
