A tragic road accident in the mountainous region of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district claimed the lives of a police head constable and his wife after their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a stream. The incident also left their two children injured, officials said.
The accident occurred near Basti village in the Bhaderwah area when the family was travelling in a private vehicle. The sudden mishap shocked local residents and prompted rescue efforts by authorities and locals.
Victims identified as police constable and wife
The deceased were identified as Head Constable Zulfikar Ali, who was posted with the District Special Branch in Bhaderwah, and his wife Rehana Begum. Both died on the spot after the vehicle fell into the stream.
Officials said the couple was travelling with their two sons when the accident occurred. The family was reportedly on their way from Bhaderwah to Bani at the time of the incident.
The sudden loss has left the police department and the local community mourning.
Children injured in the accident
The couple’s two sons, Arshad Ahmed (20) and Kamran Ahmed (24), sustained injuries in the accident. They were immediately rescued and shifted to the Sub-District Hospital in Bhaderwah for treatment.
Doctors said the injured were receiving medical care and were reported to be out of danger. Officials added that necessary assistance is being provided to the affected family members.
Vehicle reportedly lost control
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle lost control while navigating the hilly road near Basti village before plunging into the stream. The terrain in the region is known for its narrow and winding roads, which often pose challenges for drivers.
Authorities believe the accident may have occurred due to the vehicle skidding on the road. However, the exact cause is being examined as part of the investigation.
Local residents and passersby rushed to the spot after the accident and helped in rescue efforts before emergency teams arrived.
Leaders express condolences
Union Minister Jitendra Singh expressed grief over the tragic incident and offered condolences to the bereaved family.
In a message posted on social media, he said he had spoken with the district administration after learning about the accident and assured that all possible assistance would be provided to the injured children and the family of the deceased.
Officials also confirmed that the district administration is coordinating with police and healthcare authorities to ensure proper support for the victims’ family.
