Court orders FIR against Inspector over assault during Majithia hearing

Punjab: A judicial magistrate has directed the Sohana Police Station to file an FIR against Inspector Jashanpreet Singh in connection with the physical assault of court watchman Baljeet Singh during Bikram Singh Majithia’s appearance before the Mohali court on July 6.

CCTV footage confirmed that the inspector seized the gate keys and physically assaulted the on‑duty chowkidar. The court held that this constituted violence against a government employee and ordered registration under IPC sections 115(2), 132, 221, and 304. The next hearing is scheduled for August 1.

In a separate incident today, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leaders—Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, and Sikander Singh Maluka—were prevented from meeting Majithia at New Nabha Jail, where he remains in judicial custody till August 2. Cheema condemned the denial as a violation of prison regulations and human rights, suggesting it reflected political vendetta by the ruling authorities.

Majithia’s bail plea, which was heard from 10:30 am to 3 pm in Mohali court, was denied, with the matter deferred to August 1 for further arguments. Additionally, his petition requesting a shift to a separate “orange‑category” barrack—citing credible threats to his life due to his status and the presence of high‑security inmates in his vicinity—has been deferred to August 2. The court has asked the state’s additional director general of police (prisons) to submit a report clarifying his classification under the jail manual.

Majithia was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 in Amritsar on charges of accumulating assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Authorities allege he laundered approximately ₹540 crore through shell companies and properties across Punjab, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh. A Special Investigation Team has linked the case to a prior NDPS FIR registered in 2021. Senior officials, including former Punjab DGP Sidharth Chattopadhyaya, have reportedly corroborated the allegations; Majithia’s legal team has opposed the claims, calling them politically motivated.

Former minister Majithia has also petitioned for live-streaming of his court proceedings, arguing the case is politically charged and worth public scrutiny. The hearing on bail and transparency applications is set for July 30, with the barrack‑change petition due on August 2.
