West Bengal: A young man has been arrested in Gurap, located in West Bengal’s Hoogly district, on charges of raping and murdering a five-year-old girl. The accused is set to appear in district court on Monday, where the public prosecutor will request his police custody.
According to the victim’s parents, the girl went missing on Sunday evening. When she did not return home, her parents began asking neighbors if they had seen her. An eyewitness reported seeing the girl enter the accused’s house, prompting the parents and some neighbors to confront him. After noticing inconsistencies in his statements, they contacted the local police.
Following a thorough search, police discovered the girl in the accused’s home. She was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
West Bengal has recently experienced a troubling rise in cases of rape and murder, particularly involving minor girls. A notable incident earlier this year involved the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, with the trial ongoing and civic volunteer Sanjay Roy identified as the main suspect in the case.
