Morocco: At least 37 people lost their lives after sudden flash floods triggered by torrential rainfall swept through Morocco’s Atlantic coastal province of Safi, around 330 km south of the capital Rabat, according to state-run 2M TV.
One Hour of Rain Triggers Massive Destruction
Local authorities said that barely an hour of intense rainfall was enough to inundate homes and shops in Safi’s old town. Floodwaters swept away vehicles, submerged streets and cut off several roads in nearby areas, severely hampering movement and rescue operations.
Rescue Operations Ongoing, Dozens Injured
Officials confirmed that at least 14 people were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment. Emergency services and local authorities continue rescue and relief efforts in affected areas as they assess damage and search for survivors.
Heavy Rains Follow Years of Severe Drought
Morocco is currently witnessing widespread rainfall and snowfall across the Atlas Mountains after enduring seven consecutive years of drought, which had significantly depleted major water reservoirs. While the rainfall brings relief to water-starved regions, authorities have warned that extreme weather events pose serious risks, especially in vulnerable urban and low-lying areas.
