J&K: Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said in Srinagar on Tuesday that a decision on restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is likely to come “very soon”.
Centre Reiterates Assurance in Parliament
Speaking to reporters at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), Meghwal said the matter is sensitive, but the Centre is committed to following the proper process.
He referred to earlier assurances given by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha, saying the people of Jammu and Kashmir will get what is rightfully due to them.
Comments Made During Legal Services Event
Meghwal was in Srinagar to attend a regional workshop on the Tele-Law (DISHA) scheme, which aims to provide legal help through technology.
Although the event focused on legal services, his remarks on statehood quickly drew public and political attention.
Omar Abdullah Responds with Cautious Hope
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who was also present at the event, said his government is in regular talks with the Centre.
However, he noted that the process of restoring statehood has taken longer than expected.
He added that people in Jammu and Kashmir have been waiting for positive news for over a year and hoped the Union minister’s statement would finally lead to a decision.
