US Senator Marco Rubio has stated that India is a crucial strategic partner for the US, and that America will not forge relationships with any other country at the expense of its ties with India. He acknowledged that India is among the select few nations that wield significant global influence.
Marco Rubio made these remarks at a time when the US was facing accusations of being lenient toward Pakistan and of providing assistance to its terrorist factions. During a press conference held alongside External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, when asked about a perceived stagnation in India-US relations, Marco Rubio asserted that the India-US partnership is not merely being restored or revived; rather, it is already robust and is poised to be further advanced.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, for his part, appeared keen to clarify the distinction between America’s relationship with Pakistan and its ties with India. He noted that both nations share democratic values and are continuously accountable to their respective populations. Our partnership against terrorism remains steadfast, as both countries have suffered—directly or indirectly—at the hands of terrorism. We must stand united in our fight against it. Meanwhile, Jaishankar advocated for prioritizing India’s national interests regarding oil procurement.
Jaishankar stated that, in order to navigate the current geopolitical landscape, India is actively diversifying its energy sources and enhancing its energy security; therefore, the energy market should not be subjected to restrictions. We seek diversification to procure energy at competitive prices—a strategy we intend to sustain, as it remains our fundamental responsibility to ensure access to affordable energy for our population of 1.4 billion people. Jaishankar unequivocally declared that, much in the same way the United States prioritizes its own interests by adopting an “America First” approach, India, too, has placed its own interests at the forefront. These discussions and statements emerged during a press briefing held following extensive talks between visiting US Senator Marco Rubio and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
In addition to meeting with Jaishankar, Marco Rubio also held consultations with India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval. The two sides held serious discussions regarding cooperation in defense, security, and strategic manufacturing. These discussions encompassed AI, semiconductors, defense technology, quantum computing, energy, supply chains, and space technology. Following this meeting, several other points have also become clear. One such point is that the long-awaited trade agreement between India and the United States is nearing finalization. Rubio stated that this agreement would be mutually beneficial and sustainable for both nations, serving to advance their respective interests.
Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation across the sectors of trade, rare minerals, energy, and defense. This marks Marco Rubio’s maiden visit to India. This visit comes at a time when tensions regarding trade policies and tariffs have persisted between the two nations over the past year. Undoubtedly, this visit represents an endeavor to alleviate these tensions and chart a clear path forward. Rubio further remarked that significant progress has been achieved, and that the U.S. and India are poised to forge a sustainable agreement. Concerted efforts are currently underway to transform this agreement into reality.
Rubio pledged that U.S. trade representatives would visit India very shortly. Fundamentally, the primary challenge at present is the substantial trade imbalance existing between the United States and India. The value of the Indian Rupee continues to depreciate against the U.S. Dollar; consequently, American imports are becoming increasingly expensive—a factor that is fueling inflation within the country. Jaishankar unequivocally asserted that trade expansion is contingent upon the relationship being based on equality.
