A spell of rain has left Delhi-NCR wrapped in a blanket of fog and mist, giving the region an unusual March morning. Areas across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad reported reduced visibility early in the day, slowing down traffic and affecting routine movement.
The sudden shift in weather comes after overnight showers, which increased moisture levels in the air one of the main reasons behind the foggy start.
Visibility dips, commuters face trouble
With fog lingering through the morning hours, visibility dropped significantly in several parts of the NCR. Commuters, especially those travelling during early hours, had to navigate through hazy conditions, leading to slower traffic movement on key roads and highways.
Though not as severe as peak winter fog, the conditions were enough to disrupt normal pace, particularly in low-lying and open areas where mist tends to settle more.
Sudden chill returns in March
The rainfall has also brought down temperatures, giving the region a rare cool spell for this time of year. On Saturday, Delhi recorded temperatures around 16°C, which is noticeably below the usual March average.
Cloud cover, light rain and moist winds combined to create a winter-like feel, catching many residents off guard after the recent warm days.
Western disturbance behind weather shift
Meteorologists attribute the changing weather to an active western disturbance affecting north India. This system has triggered rain, cloud formation and a dip in temperatures across Delhi-NCR and neighbouring states.
Such disturbances are known to bring short spells of rain and thunderstorms, often leading to sudden fluctuations in temperature during the transition from winter to summer.
More rain expected on March 23
The weather is not expected to stabilise just yet. Forecasts indicate that another round of light rain or drizzle could hit Delhi-NCR around March 23.
The India Meteorological Department has already hinted at continued cloudiness and intermittent rain over the next few days, suggesting that the cool conditions may persist for a while longer.
Relief from heat but caution advised
While the rain has brought relief from the early onset of heat, authorities advise caution due to fluctuating weather. Sudden temperature drops, combined with fog and damp conditions, can impact health and travel.
Experts recommend keeping track of weather updates, especially for those planning early morning or late-night travel, as visibility may continue to vary depending on rainfall and humidity levels.
