New Delhi: Delhi Police have busted an alleged extortion gang accused of using gangster Goldy Brar’s name to threaten contractors and businessmen in the Delhi-NCR region and have arrested four people, officials said.
According to police, the gang allegedly arranged extortion calls from Dubai using a voice resembling that of Goldy Brar. Investigators said the accused had also allegedly planned to carry out a firing attack on a contractor in North Delhi, but police arrested key accused before the attack could take place.
Gang Used Goldy Brar’s Name for Extortion Calls
Police said the gang allegedly targeted contractors and businessmen by invoking Goldy Brar’s name during extortion calls.
One of the alleged targets was North Delhi contractor Praveen Jain. Police said the accused had allegedly made preparations to carry out a firing attack on Jain. Shooters had reportedly reached Delhi and one of them had allegedly made preparations for the planned attack.
A businessman from Rohini was also allegedly threatened by the gang, with an extortion demand of Rs 1 crore, according to police.
Investigators said weapons were allegedly procured from an arms dealer in Gujarat and subsequently sent to Uttar Pradesh in connection with the planned attack.
Four Arrested, Dubai-Based Suspect Identified
A North Delhi Police team led by DCP Niharika Bhatt arrested four accused, including alleged gang members and shooters.
Police have also identified a suspected mastermind based in Dubai who allegedly facilitated the extortion calls using Goldy Brar’s name.
Investigators are now probing the suspected Dubai connection, the local network and the movement of weapons. The arrested accused are being questioned to establish the extent of the network and identify other people who may be involved.
Police have so far not established a direct link between the arrested suspects and Goldy Brar himself. Investigators are examining whether the accused merely used his name and identity to intimidate victims and demand money.
Police Probe Other Goldy Brar Extortion Calls
The arrests come amid other cases in Delhi in which callers have allegedly used Goldy Brar’s name to threaten victims and demand money.
In a case reported in September, a 50-year-old woman from North Delhi’s Civil Lines allegedly received extortion calls from a foreign number from a person claiming to be associated with Brar. Police said the caller allegedly demanded Rs 200 crore and threatened the woman and her husband.
An FIR was registered at the Civil Lines police station, with the Delhi Police Special Cell also involved in the investigation. Police were examining whether the caller had any actual connection with Goldy Brar or had simply used his name to issue the threat.
The latest investigation is focused on identifying the alleged Dubai-based mastermind, tracing the suspected extortion network and determining whether other contractors and businessmen were targeted in a similar manner.
