DGCA's new rule: 60% of seats to be free

New Delhi: India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has directed airlines to provide at least 60% of seats on every flight free of charge. This new rule, which will come into effect on April 20th, aims to make air travel more convenient for passengers.

Currently, airlines only offer free selection of about 20% of seats, while passengers are charged between ₹200 and ₹2,000 for the remaining seats.

Emphasis on Transparency and Convenience
The DGCA has instructed airlines to ensure that the seat allocation process is completely clear and transparent. Passengers should be clearly informed about which seats are free and which are charged.

Also, airlines must clearly display all information on their websites and booking platforms. Passengers traveling on the same PNR have also been instructed to seat together if possible.

Airlines Express Concern
Major airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet have expressed concern over this decision. They say it will impact their revenue and may require them to increase ticket prices.

The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) has also demanded a review of this decision.

Relief for Passengers
This decision comes at a time when passengers have been complaining about the additional charges levied on seat selection, baggage, and other services. The new rule is expected to provide relief to passengers and improve the travel experience.
