New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed that Special Summary Revisions (SSR) in four states and two UTs would be held and the final voter lists would be published on January 21, 2027.
Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu would be covered under this process.
Eligible voters who might have been excluded from the electoral rolls would be enrolled during this process and the existing lists would be revised.
Draft Voter Lists Would Be Published on November 30
The rationalization of polling stations should be completed by November 20, as per the schedule released by the Election Commission.
Integrated draft electoral rolls would be published on November 30. Claims/objections would be received till December 30.
The final electoral roll would be published on January 21, 2027.
This revision would be carried out under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. January 1, 2027, would be the qualifying date.
Advance Applications for 2027 Would Be Accepted
Applications in advance from those who would qualify as voters on April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027, have also been arranged by the Commission.
They can apply to get themselves enrolled.
The ECI had already issued guidelines on September 29 for special drives to enroll eligible voters who had been excluded from the electoral rolls. This includes young and first-time voters.
What is the Difference Between SSR and SIR?
SSR refers to the revision of existing voter lists by adding eligible voters and removing ineligible or duplicate entries. Whereas SIR refers to preparation of fresh electoral rolls.
The Commission had previously announced the schedule of the SSR in 17 states and UTs. These would be places where the SIR had already been held, and Assam where the intensive revision was not done.
Six more states and UTs have now been added.
SSR Schedule for Other States and UTs Not Yet Released
The Election Commission has stated that the schedule for the SSR in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Delhi, Tripura and Telangana would be released later. This is because the SIR is currently being held or has just been completed.
Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh would have their schedule released separately, taking into account the weather in these areas.
