EC Takes Strict Action on Mallikarjun Kharge's Statement, Issues Notice to Congress President

The Election Commission of India on Wednesday took a serious view of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s “terrorist” remark regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Commission has issued a show-cause notice to Kharge in this matter.

Action Taken Following BJP’s Complaint

This action came after a BJP delegation, including Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, met the Election Commission and demanded strict action against Kharge.

Kharge’s Statement Sparks Controversy

Speaking to the media in Chennai on Tuesday, Kharge called Prime Minister Modi a “terrorist” while questioning the AIADMK’s alliance with the BJP. This statement sparked a political controversy, with the BJP calling it an insult to the country’s 1.4 billion people.

Clarification given on statement

Kharge later clarified his statement, saying that he did not mean to call the Prime Minister a “terrorist,” but rather that he “intimidates people and political parties.”
