Elderly man who lost family in Jaisalmer accident struggles for compensation

Jaisalmer: a major accident occurred when an AC sleeper bus traveling on the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway suddenly caught fire. This tragic incident devastated many families.

80-year-old Shorab Khan, a resident of Bhagu village, was also a victim of the accident. His son Peer Mohammad, daughter-in-law Imamat, and three grandchildren—Irfan, Yunus, and Haseena—died in the accident.

It was reported that Peer Mohammad was standing in the gallery with his family seated on the sleeper seats. When the fire broke out, he tried to break the glass, but was unsuccessful. The children were burned alive on the spot, while other family members later died during treatment.

Government announced assistance

Following the accident, the central and state governments announced financial assistance.

The state government announced a grant of ₹10 lakh per deceased and ₹25 lakh for three or more deaths. The central government provided ₹2 lakh per deceased.

Accordingly, Pir Mohammad’s family was supposed to receive a total of ₹35 lakh. Of this, ₹15 lakh has been deposited into their account from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and ₹10 lakh from the central government.

One rule hinders compensation

However, the ₹10 lakh under the Chief Minister’s Ayushman Accident Insurance Scheme has not yet been received.

In fact, only the person whose name is registered on the deceased’s Aadhaar card can apply under this scheme. Shorab Khan’s application has been stalled because his name is not on Pir Mohammad’s Aadhaar card.

The Jodhpur Collector’s Office wrote to the Jaipur CMO on November 19, 2025, seeking guidance on this matter.

Still waiting for help

Following this, the State Financial Insurance Corporation was also asked for advice. On January 27, 2026, the Project Director’s office requested the necessary information, but a final decision regarding payment has not yet been made.

Even after nearly six months, Shorab Khan continues to seek government assistance and awaits justice after losing his entire family.
