Ashutosh Rana says theatre is training ground, prepare an actor for media like cinema

Mumbai: Ashutosh Rana, renowned for his roles in films like ‘Dushman’, ‘Sangharsh’, and ‘Pathaan’, recently discussed the distinction between theatre and cinema in an interview, particularly in relation to his theatre production ‘Humaare Ram’. A graduate of the National School of Drama (NSD), he emphasized the unique significance of both mediums.

He described theatre as a vital training ground for actors, contrasting it with cinema, which he likened to a performance that reaches a wider audience simultaneously, regardless of location. In theatre, he noted, performances are limited to those present in the audience at that moment.

Rana highlighted that while both forms of art are important, effective training is essential for impactful performances. He believes that training prepares artists to showcase their talents to the world. “For any performance, training is crucial,” he stated, affirming his belief in the foundational role of theatre in shaping an actor’s skills.

He also pointed out that theatre fosters alertness, awareness, and activity, which are essential for performances like ‘Truth of the Moment’. He believes that enhancing these qualities leads to greater enlightenment and the ability to fully utilize one’s talents, describing the experience as magical when one’s faculties are awakened.
