Indian Railways is all set to transform overnight train travel in India with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, marking the beginning of a new premium era in long-distance rail journeys.
The new sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 17, 2026, from Malda, West Bengal.
Until now, Vande Bharat trains were known primarily for high-speed daytime travel. With this launch, the same speed, comfort, and modern features are now being extended to overnight journeys, offering passengers a faster and more comfortable alternative to conventional night trains.
Launch Route and Operations
The inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will operate between Howrah Junction (West Bengal) and Kamakhya Junction (near Guwahati, Assam).
- Total distance: approximately 1,000 kilometers
- Currently served by slower overnight trains
- Expected to significantly reduce travel time
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that all trials, testing, and safety certifications for the train have been successfully completed.
Passenger services are expected to begin 15 to 20 days after the official flag-off, greatly improving rail connectivity to the Northeastern region.
Train Configuration and Speed
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will operate with a 16-coach configuration, consisting of:
- 11 AC 3-Tier coaches
- 4 AC 2-Tier coaches
- 1 AC First Class coach
The train is designed for a maximum speed of 180 kmph.
However, due to existing railway infrastructure, it will operate at a maximum speed of 130 kmph on current tracks.
Fare Structure: Premium Pricing Explained
One of the biggest changes introduced with the Vande Bharat Sleeper is its airline-style fare model.
- Minimum chargeable distance: 400 kilometers, even for shorter journeys
- Base fares (excluding GST):
- ₹2.4 per km for AC 3-Tier
- ₹3.1 per km for AC 2-Tier
- ₹3.8 per km for AC First Class
Minimum fares up to 400 km:
- ₹960 for AC 3-Tier
- ₹1,240 for AC 2-Tier
- ₹1,520 for AC First Class
For longer distances, fares increase proportionally. On extended routes, First Class fares can go up to ₹13,300.
These fares are higher than Rajdhani Express, clearly positioning the Vande Bharat Sleeper as a premium service.
GST will be charged separately, and no ticket concessions will be available.
Reservation Rules: No Waiting List, No RAC
The Vande Bharat Sleeper introduces a major shift in reservation policy:
- No RAC
- No waiting list
- Only fully confirmed tickets will be issued
All berths will be released on the first day of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP).
Limited quotas are available for:
- Senior citizens
- Women
- Persons with disabilities
- Duty pass holders
However, only fully reimbursable passes are permitted.
There are no VIP or emergency quotas, and even senior railway officials will not have access to special passes—ensuring fair and equal access for all passengers.
Ticket Booking and Berth Allocation
- Digital payments are strongly encouraged
- Digital payments allow refunds within 24 hours of cancellation
- At booking counters, digital modes are preferred
- Cash refunds will follow standard refund timelines
Automatic lower berth allotment is provided to:
- Men aged 60 years and above
- Women aged 45 years and above
- Passengers traveling with children who do not require separate berths

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed with a strong focus on comfort, safety, and modern amenities.
Key features include:
- Fully air-conditioned coaches
- Automatic sliding doors
- Bio-vacuum toilets
- Improved suspension for smoother rides
- Individual reading lights and charging points at each berth
- Onboard Wi-Fi connectivity
Safety Features:
- CCTV surveillance
- Fire detection systems
- Emergency buttons
- Collision-avoidance technology
Enhanced noise insulation and automatic climate control ensure a quieter and more comfortable sleeping environment.
Passengers will also be served regional cuisine, adding a local flavor to the travel experience.
Future Expansion Plans
Indian Railways plans to introduce around 12 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains by the end of the year, with several more already under production.
