Food poisoning at a wedding in Mumbai; 31 people, including the bride and groom, hospitalized

Mumbai: At least 31 people, including the bride and groom, fell ill after allegedly consuming contaminated food at a wedding in Mumbai’s Nahur West area. All have been admitted to different hospitals, officials said on Monday.

400 to 500 guests attended the wedding

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abhay Singh Deshmukh, the wedding ceremony was held on November 1 at the Nalanda Buddha Vihar Hall in Nahur West. Around 400 to 500 guests attended the event.

He said that approximately 70 to 100 guests who ate the final portion of the meal reported feeling unwell. Many people began vomiting and experiencing other health problems after eating. The affected people were then taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Patients being treated at three hospitals

According to officials, 22 of the sick people have been admitted to MT Agarwal Hospital in Mulund. Four young children have been admitted to Kamgar Hospital in Mulund, while five others are being treated at a hospital in Vikhroli.

Officials stated that all patients are currently in stable condition and are undergoing treatment. Relevant agencies are monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps.

Vomiting and discomfort began after 11 p.m

A hospitalized person told IANS that the wedding took place at the Nalanda Buddha Vihar Hall. During the final stages of the ceremony, when the bride and groom, along with some others, sat down to eat, several people became ill. He said that around 30 to 40 people from his neighborhood were also present at the ceremony and all fell ill. He demanded action in this matter.

Meanwhile, the groom’s maternal uncle stated that the guests had eaten dinner between 4 and 4:30 pm, but their health began to deteriorate after returning home.

He said, “After reaching home, everyone started vomiting around 11 to 11:30 pm. The bride was the first to feel unwell.”

He feared that at least 30 to 40 people in his group had been affected by food poisoning. He said the number of patients could rise further, as people are still arriving at the hospital.

Demand for action against caterers and food suppliers

The groom’s maternal uncle held the caterers and food suppliers responsible for the incident and demanded strict action against them. He also demanded an investigation into the role of the committee managing the wedding venue.

A friend of the groom also stated that all the patients are currently stable, but many are still arriving at the hospital for treatment. He alleged that the incident occurred due to the negligence of the caterers and the lack of quality checks on the food.

Meanwhile, the administration and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials are monitoring the situation and taking necessary action.
