Chandigarh: Senior Sikh leader Harpreet Singh on Tuesday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), saying the party lacked experienced legal experts to handle sensitive Panthic and constitutional issues.
In a post on X, Harpreet Singh remarked that it was fortunate AAP did not have legal experts like Harpal Singh Cheema, Mehtab Singh Grewal, or Paramjit Singh Sarna, nor was there a Badal-led government in power. He argued that under such circumstances, any response to religious directives could have led to serious constitutional complications.

He claimed that if elected representatives had acted in a certain manner, it could have resulted in consequences such as intervention by the Centre, questions over the government’s continuation, or even action by the Election Commission.
Harpreet Singh also questioned how a Jathedar could direct a democratically elected government to repeal or amend laws. Drawing a comparison with the past, he said several laws considered detrimental to the Sikh community had been enacted over the years, but no Jathedar had issued similar directions for their repeal.
Offering what he described as “free advice” to AAP, Harpreet Singh suggested that the party should induct experienced legal and Panthic figures such as Cheema, Grewal and Sarna. According to him, their expertise would not only help the party in legal matters but also serve the interests of the Sikh community.
The remarks come amid ongoing political debate surrounding the role of religious institutions and constitutional authorities in matters involving elected governments.
