Former MLA Jassi Khangura convicted, Sentenced to 2 years

Ludhiana: A local court in Ludhiana convicted former Congress MLA and Hotel Park Plaza owner Jasbir Singh alias Jassi Khangura in a 2008 case related to obstructing government officials during election duty. The court sentenced him to two years of imprisonment.

However, soon after the pronouncement of the sentence, the court granted him bail. His legal counsel said that an appeal against the conviction will soon be filed in the High Court.

The case was registered at the Dehlon police station and was related to alleged misbehavior with government officials and obstruction in official work during the Block Samiti elections in 2008.

According to the information, the incident took place in the Dehlon area of Ludhiana when voting for the Block Samiti elections was underway. Jassi Khangura reportedly reached the polling station during the voting process but was stopped by officials deployed on election duty.

After the polling concluded, election officials began placing ballot boxes in a vehicle. The officials alleged that the former MLA tried to prevent them from taking away the ballot boxes and also misbehaved with them, thereby obstructing their official duties.

Based on the complaint of the concerned officials, the police had registered a case under Sections 353, 341 and 332 of the IPC at Dehlon police station.

Although the matter had remained pending for years, in 2017 the then Returning Officer Fakir Singh filed a case in court. During the final hearing held on March 16, 2026, the court of Additional Sessions Judge Barinder Singh Ramana, after examining evidence and witness statements, found Jassi Khangura guilty and sentenced him to two years in jail.

His legal advisor, KK Sharma, confirmed the conviction and said the defence would challenge the verdict in the High Court.
