Gen Z and Modern Society

Generation Z (Gen Z), comprising individuals born roughly between 1997 and 2012, is the first generation to have grown up entirely in the digital age. Equipped with unprecedented technological proficiency, global connectivity, and heightened social consciousness, Gen Z is redefining the contours of modern society.

Their aspirations, innovations, and activism are reshaping governance, economics, education, and culture. As India aspires to become a developed nation by 2047 (Viksit Bharat), the role of Gen Z assumes exceptional significance.

India possesses one of the world’s youngest populations, with nearly more than 60% of its population below the age of 35. This demographic dividend, if nurtured through quality education, skill development, and productive employment, can become a formidable engine of economic growth.

The World Bank and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have consistently emphasised that youth empowerment is indispensable for sustainable development.

The foremost characteristic of Gen Z is its extraordinary digital fluency. Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, blockchain, and social media are not merely technologies but integral components of their daily existence.

Initiatives such as Digital India, Startup India, Skill India, and the rapid expansion of India’s digital public infrastructure have enabled millions of young entrepreneurs to innovate and generate employment. The emergence of globally recognised Indian start-ups and creators demonstrates the transformative potential of this generation.

Equally noteworthy is Gen Z’s commitment to environmental sustainability, gender equality, and social justice. Their active participation in climate campaigns, mental health awareness, inclusivity, and community initiatives reflects the ethos of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Youth-led movements across the world have compelled governments and corporations to embrace greater environmental responsibility and ethical governance.

The major statutory provisions in our country also provide the normative foundation for youth empowerment. The Preamble envisions Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, values that resonate strongly with Gen Z’s aspirations.

Article 19 guarantees freedom of speech and expression, enabling constructive democratic participation, while Article 21A ensures the right to education.

Furthermore, Article 51A enumerates Fundamental Duties, urging every citizen to develop scientific temper, protect the environment, preserve public property, and promote harmony—principles that are indispensable for responsible digital citizenship.

However, Gen Z confronts formidable challenges. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, automation and Artificial Intelligence are transforming labour markets at an unprecedented pace, necessitating continuous upskilling and lifelong learning.

Simultaneously, the World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the growing burden of anxiety, depression, and digital addiction among adolescents and young adults.

The proliferation of misinformation, cyberbullying, online radicalisation, and excessive screen time further underscores the necessity of digital ethics and media literacy.

Modern society must therefore equip Gen Z with not only technical expertise but also constitutional morality, emotional intelligence, ethical reasoning, and critical thinking.

Educational institutions should encourage innovation, research, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and value-based education. Families, civil society, and governments must collaborate to create an ecosystem where creativity flourishes alongside responsibility.

As Swami Vivekananda proclaimed, “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.”

Guided by this spirit, Gen Z possesses the capacity to transform demographic advantage into national strength. If empowered with opportunities, values, and visionary leadership, this generation can become the principal architect of an inclusive, innovative, sustainable, and resilient society.

The future of modern civilisation will not merely be inherited by Gen Z—it will be consciously designed and led by them.
