Netflix has removed the teaser and promotional material for the upcoming Hindi film ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ amid a growing controversy over its title, which sparked widespread public and political backlash online and offline. The decision follows objections raised by various groups and authorities, prompting the OTT platform to take down all promotional content from its streaming service and social media.
The film, starring Manoj Bajpayee and directed by Neeraj Pandey, was unveiled recently as part of Netflix India’s slate. However, soon after the teaser dropped, critics claimed the title was hurtful and offensive, alleging it targeted a particular caste and promoted negative stereotypes — claims that intensified rapidly across social platforms.
Title Sparks Social and Political Backlash
The controversy began when viewers on social media expressed concern over the term “Pandat” in the title, interpreting it as derogatory towards the Brahmin community. The backlash soon went beyond social media, with political leaders and community groups decrying the title as insensitive and demanding action.
Alongside the backlash, an FIR was registered at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow against the film’s makers on charges of hurting religious and caste sentiments and attempting to spread social animosity — a move supported by Uttar Pradesh authorities.
Government Directed Teaser Removal
According to senior leaders of the ruling party, the Centre directed Netflix to remove the teaser and related promotional content from its platform. The BJP’s spokesperson praised the swift action, saying that such content, seen as disrespectful to societal sentiments, would not be tolerated and that strict steps would be taken against those who demean any community.
In response, Netflix complied by pulling down the teaser video and promotional posts from its platform and associated channels to avoid further escalation.
Filmmakers Clarify and Acknowledge Concerns
In light of the controversy, filmmaker Neeraj Pandey released a public statement clarifying that ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ is a fictional cop drama and that the term “Pandat” refers to the film’s character and does not represent or target any caste, religion, or community. He acknowledged that the title had unintentionally caused hurt to some viewers and announced that all promotional material would be taken down for the time being.
Lead actor Manoj Bajpayee also addressed the issue, emphasizing that the film was about an individual’s journey and not meant as a commentary on any group or community. Both the director and the actor expressed respect for the concerns raised and the significance of audience sentiment.
Legal Notices and Broader Opposition
Beyond political objections, several organisations and groups also issued legal notices and petitions against the film’s makers and Netflix, seeking to halt the film’s release. Critics argued that the title could harm social harmony and offend cultural sentiments.
Community bodies, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and film industry associations like the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), also raised concerns over the title’s potential to hurt sentiments, prompting further scrutiny.
What Happens Next?
With the teaser and promotional content taken down, the controversy continues to evolve. The FIR and legal notices have put the film under scrutiny, and its makers are likely to make further decisions on title changes or continued marketing strategies in response to public sentiment and regulatory pressure.
As the debate over creative freedom and sensitivity in entertainment grows, the ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ episode highlights the delicate balance between artistic expression and cultural respect in India’s diverse social landscape.
