Patna: A brief spell of rainfall in Bihar’s Gopalganj on Saturday exposed major shortcomings in the town’s drainage infrastructure, causing widespread waterlogging and disrupting normal life across several areas.
While the rain brought temporary relief from the heat, it also submerged major roads and low-lying localities, making commuting difficult for residents and raising fresh concerns over civic preparedness ahead of the monsoon.
Sadar Hospital Flooded, Patient Movement Hit
The situation turned particularly serious at Gopalganj’s Sadar Hospital, where knee-deep water entered the premises. Pathways leading to the emergency ward were submerged, hampering the movement of stretchers and wheelchairs.
Patients and attendants were forced to wade through stagnant, dirty water, sparking concerns over hygiene and the possible spread of infections inside the district’s largest healthcare facility.
Overflowing Drains Add to Public Misery
Overflowing drains mixed with rainwater in several residential areas, spreading foul-smelling contaminated water onto roads and lanes. Residents, including schoolchildren, women and elderly people, struggled to move through waterlogged streets.
Residents Question Drain-Cleaning Claims
Locals questioned the effectiveness of pre-monsoon drain-cleaning operations, alleging that despite claims of crores being spent annually on desilting and maintenance, even a short spell of rain was enough to cripple the town.
Many residents warned that if the city faces such severe waterlogging after light rain, the situation could become much worse during peak monsoon.
Demand for Immediate Action
Citizens have urged the administration to improve drainage infrastructure, ensure proper cleaning of drains, and implement long-term flood management measures to prevent recurring urban flooding.
The incident has intensified public pressure on authorities to address the drainage crisis before the monsoon season escalates.
