A devastating road accident in Gwalior claimed the lives of five members of a family, while five others were injured after a speeding SUV crashed into an autorickshaw early Friday morning.
The incident occurred in the ThatiPur area near Parshuram Chauraha around 2:50–3:00 am, sending shockwaves across the city. The victims were travelling in an autorickshaw when the collision took place.
Victims were returning from temple
According to police officials, the family was returning from the Sheetla Mata temple after offering prayers on the occasion of Ram Navami when the tragedy struck.
The autorickshaw was carrying multiple members of the same family, including women and children. The sudden impact gave passengers little to no time to react, leading to severe casualties.
SUV was allegedly fleeing from police
Preliminary investigation revealed that the SUV involved in the crash was being chased by police for rash driving prior to the incident.
Reports suggest the vehicle had earlier hit another vehicle near a bus stand and was attempting to escape when it rammed into the autorickshaw at high speed. The reckless driving is believed to be the primary cause of the accident.
Impact so severe, auto smashed into tree
Eyewitnesses stated that the collision was extremely powerful, causing the autorickshaw to be flung off balance and crash into a roadside tree.
The vehicle was severely damaged, and several passengers were trapped inside. Local residents and police rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations immediately.
Five dead, several injured including children
Five members of the same family died due to the impact, while four to five others, including children, sustained serious injuries.
The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital and trauma centre, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Some victims remain in critical condition.
