Demonstration of Bishnoi society in Hisar: Protest against permission to kill Nilgai

In the Hisar district of Haryana, the Bishnoi community held a protest march today against the permission to kill nilgai (blue bulls). The march, which began at the Bishnoi temple and ended at the mini-secretariat, saw a large number of community members participating.

Farmers have always coexisted with wildlife

Advocate Chandar Saharan, the president of the All India Bishnoi Wildlife Protection Assembly in Hisar, stated that farmers in Haryana have always farmed in harmony with wildlife. He mentioned that no farmer or organization has ever requested permission to kill nilgai.

Met with the forest minister to propose solutions

The Bishnoi community had already met with the Chief Wildlife Officer on December 17, 2024, and with the Forest Minister on January 4, 2025, to suggest alternative solutions. These included options such as relocating nilgai to forests in other states, sterilization, or compensating the affected farmers.

Submitted a memorandum to the DC in the name of the CM

The protesters submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) in the name of the Chief Minister. The memorandum demanded the immediate withdrawal of provisions under the Haryana Wildlife (Conservation) 2024 Act, which allows the killing of male nilgais. Community representatives stated that the government should reconsider this issue while respecting the sentiments of wildlife lovers and farmers.
