Chandigarh: Stilt parking will now be mandatory in residential buildings having more than two floors in all cities of Haryana. However, in the case of self-use, buildings having up to three floors will be exempted from stilt parking. Stilt parking will be mandatory in all buildings having four floors.

The government has taken this decision in view of the increasing problem of vehicle parking in cities. For this, the Town and Country Planning Department has also started preparations. The government will also make changes in the Building Code-2017 on behalf of the department.

The Town and Country Planning Department has sought objections and suggestions from the people for this till February 1. Whatever suggestions or objections will come from the people, after implementing them, new rules will be implemented after the approval of CM Nayab Saini.

In the new rules, buildings having more than two floors with separate flats will be registered only if it has stilt parking. According to the new system, stilt parking will not be required up to three floors for self-use only. Apart from this, it will be mandatory to provide proof regarding registration on the DOST portal for construction or demolition of all plots larger than 500 square meters in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Earlier, the Haryana government’s policy of building stilt plus four storey buildings has been challenged by former Army Chief General VP Malik in the Punjab-Haryana High Court, which is to be heard on January 22. General VP Malik’s petition alleges that Panchkula and surrounding areas fall in seismic zone four. Scientific study has not been done while giving such permission.
