Protest in support of farmers in Rohtak; DC office surrounded

In Rohtak district of Haryana, Kisan Sabha protested against the repressive policies used to crush the farmers’ movement on the borders of Punjab. The farmers surrounded the DC office, shouting slogans against the government and submitted a memorandum to the government through the DDPO.

Farmer leader Sumit Singh said that some farmer organizations of Punjab were agitating for their demands for more than a year. While going to Delhi, they were forcibly stopped by the Haryana Police at Shambhu and Khanauri borders adjoining Punjab, which was illegal. The ministers of the central government also pretended to talk to the leaders of the agitating farmer organizations, but the Center did not allow the Haryana government to open the border unconstitutionally for the farmers to go to Delhi.

Sumit Singh said that on March 19, as soon as the next round of talks ended in Chandigarh, the Punjab Police arrested hundreds of agitating farmer activists and leaders. The police caused heavy damage to the tractor trolleys parked on the borders for a year and the goods and stages temporarily kept on the dharna. Also, the goods were looted. Even before this, farmer leaders were stopped from going to Chandigarh and arrested.

The government had withdrawn 3 agricultural laws

Sumit Singh said that after the withdrawal of the three laws, the Central Government had given a written assurance on 9 December 2021 regarding legal guarantee of crop purchase at minimum support price, reconsideration of electricity bill, withdrawal of police cases etc. But on November 25, by releasing the draft of the national format of agricultural marketing scheme, it has expressed its intention to open the agricultural sector to the corporate sector without any hindrance.
