Heavy rain is lashing Jalandhar since morning. A warning for heavy rainfall at isolated locations has been issued for seven districts in Punjab today. These include Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali). Meanwhile, Chandigarh is expected to remain partly cloudy.
Light rain or thundershowers are likely at one or two places during the day. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature has risen by 2.1°C, bringing it close to normal levels. The highest temperature in the state was recorded in Bathinda at 39.2°C.
Earlier, on August 5, the highest rainfall of 12 mm was recorded in Barnala. Additionally, Amritsar received 6 mm of rain, Gurdaspur 2 mm, and Fatehgarh Sahib and Ludhiana 1.5 mm each. Only trace rainfall was recorded in Pathankot.
Possibility of rain in some areas
According to Surendra Pal, Director of the Meteorological Department, the monsoon trough is passing through North India. Furthermore, the impact of the Western Disturbance has not yet fully dissipated. There is also a low-pressure area (cyclonic circulation) persisting over Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
These weather systems have led to increased humidity levels across Punjab and Chandigarh. Consequently, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in many areas of both regions over the next 24 hours, with heavy rainfall likely at isolated spots.
Electricity demand recorded at 14,603 MW
With rising heat and humidity, electricity consumption in the state has also increased. The power demand was recorded at 14,603 MW. Of this, the state generated 4,683 MW itself, while the remainder was sourced from the central grid. The state received 9,921 MW of power from the Centre, which was 497 MW less than its allocated share of 10,418 MW.
Below the danger mark
The water level at Bhakra Dam stands at 1,607.17 feet, which is 72.83 feet below the danger mark of 1,680 feet. The dam is receiving an inflow of 46,663 cusecs of water, while 23,269 cusecs are being released. The water level at Pong Dam is 1,343.6 feet, which is 46.4 feet below the danger mark of 1,390 feet; the dam is receiving an inflow of 23,380 cusecs, and 13,715 cusecs are being released.
