Jalandhar/Hoshiarpur: Two days of continuous rainfall have caused widespread disruption in Punjab’s Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur districts, damaging infrastructure, flooding roads, and affecting traffic movement.
A portion of a newly constructed bridge on the Malsian-Shahkot road in Jalandhar collapsed after heavy rain. The concrete slab of the bridge gave way, exposing the steel reinforcement bars beneath, raising serious concerns over its structural safety.
Roads Waterlogged, Service Lane Turns Into Mud Track
Heavy rainfall has left several roads in Jalandhar’s Focal Point industrial area submerged under water. The service lane stretching from Lamba Pind Chowk to Focal Point has turned into a muddy stretch, making it extremely dangerous for commuters.
Poor drainage has prevented rainwater from receding even after 24 hours. The waterlogged and damaged road has become a major hazard for heavy vehicles transporting goods to and from the industrial hub.
Truck Overturns on Rain-Damaged Road
A truck overturned near the flyover on the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur road after it lost balance on the rain-damaged stretch. The vehicle was later lifted and restored with the help of a crane.
Residents said several trucks have been overturning on the service lane due to the damaged road, accumulated water, and thick mud, as drivers are unable to judge the depth of the potholes hidden beneath the water.
Tractor Swept Away in Hoshiarpur
In Hoshiarpur, a tractor-trolley was swept away while attempting to cross a seasonal rivulet (khadd) during heavy rainfall. A video of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing the vehicle being submerged in the strong water current.
Fortunately, the people travelling on the tractor managed to escape safely and came out of the flowing water without any casualties.
Drainage Concerns Surface
The rainfall has once again exposed poor drainage infrastructure in Jalandhar. Despite Focal Point being one of Punjab’s major industrial and revenue-generating areas, rainwater remained accumulated on roads for more than a day.
The damaged roads, waterlogging, and inadequate drainage have disrupted traffic movement and raised concerns over civic infrastructure in the affected areas.
