New Delhi: Security has been tightened across several states, including Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, after twin blasts rocked the national capital near the Red Fort on Monday evening, leaving eight people dead and 12 others injured, officials said.
According to Delhi Police, the explosions occurred within minutes of each other in a crowded area near the historic monument, triggering panic among locals and tourists. The blasts, suspected to have been planted in parked vehicles, caused extensive damage to nearby shops and cars.
Emergency services and bomb disposal squads were rushed to the site, and the injured were taken to Lok Nayak and RML hospitals. Senior officials from the Delhi Police Special Cell and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have reached the spot to assess the situation.
Security agency sources told NDTV that Mumbai has been placed on high alert, with security being ramped up at vital installations, railway stations, and airports. Similarly, Uttar Pradesh Police have been directed to increase patrolling and conduct intensive checks in sensitive districts.
Reports also said that the security has been also beefed up at India-Nepal border.
An investigation is underway to ascertain the nature of the explosives and identify those behind the attack, officials added.
