Glacier Breaks in Himachal; Workers Flee for Safety as Pangi-Chamba Road Remains Shut for 5 Months

Himachal Glacier Incident

Himachal Glacier Incident

Yesterday evening (April 30), a glacier suddenly broke and fell onto the road in Churah, Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. During this, the glacier fell on the road connecting Chamba to Pangi. Seeing this, the workers and laborers engaged in road restoration at Karthnala in Satrundi on the Bairagarh-Sachpass-Kilad road ran and saved their lives.

It is worth noting that in recent days, due to heavy snowfall in the area, the road was closed for traffic. Therefore, the laborers and employees of the Public Works Department were engaged in road restoration. During this, the glacier suddenly broke and started flowing towards the road like a river of snow.

Ran after hearing the glacier fall sound

According to the information – as soon as the employees and workers engaged in road restoration heard the sounds of the glacier falling from the mountain, they started running around. Even a little delay could have caused a major accident.

It is being reported that it took 50 to 70 seconds for the glacier to reach the road from the point where it broke, during which time the employees and workers were also able to escape. However, there is information that some machinery suffered minor damage in this incident. After this, road restoration has been stopped.

The road is closed for three to four months every year.

This road, connecting the remote areas of Pangi and Chamba, has been closed to all types of vehicles since December. These days, the PWD machinery and workers are engaged in snow removal. This road gets closed for three to four months every winter due to heavy snowfall. However, there remains a risk of glacier collapse in the area.
