In the Kamand area of Mandi district, a B.Tech student from IIT Mandi drowned while bathing in the Riyagadi stream. The deceased has been identified as Vipin Kumar (21), a resident of Ward-1, Old City, Loharu, Bhiwani (Haryana).
He was pursuing a B.Tech degree in Data Science at IIT and resided in the hostel located at the institute’s South Campus in Kamand.
According to reports, the student had gone with friends on Sunday to bathe in the Riyagadi stream, situated approximately two kilometers away from the IIT Mandi campus.
It is reported that he did not know how to swim and drowned due to being unaware of the water’s depth. Upon receiving the information, locals pulled him out of the stream, and he was immediately rushed to the Zonal Hospital in Mandi, where doctors pronounced him dead. The police have handed over the body to the family members.
Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar stated that necessary legal proceedings are being initiated in accordance with regulations.
Meanwhile, IIT Registrar Dr. K.S. Pandey stated that the institute would conduct an inquiry into this incident to ensure that such occurrences are not repeated in the future. The institute is currently investigating the matter.
