46 drinking water schemes stalled due to rain

Shimla: Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh have created a water crisis in many areas, including the capital, Shimla. The rain has wreaked havoc on drinking water schemes, and the supply has come to a halt due to the main source being washed away. 46 drinking water schemes have been disrupted across the state. Of these, Shimla and Sirmaur have the maximum number of 17 drinking water schemes, each stalled.

In Shimla district, four drinking water schemes—four in Theog, four in Kumarsain, four in Kotkhai, three in Jubbal, and two in Rampur—have stalled. In Sirmaur, nine drinking water schemes in Rajgarh and eight in Paonta Sahib have stalled due to rain. In other districts of the state, ten drinking water schemes in Bilaspur and two in Chamba have been disrupted. Due to the lack of water in these drinking water schemes, people have to survive by carrying water from far-off places. The Jal Shakti Department has deployed employees in the affected areas, and they have started making arrangements to repair drinking water schemes, but the rain is not stopping. In such a situation, it is also affecting the relief work.

During the last 24 hours, light rain has been recorded in most of the districts of the state. Seven mm of rain have been recorded in Bilaspur, four in Shimla, four in Kasauli, three in Kullu, three in Rampur-Bushahr, and two mm in Nahan. Mandi district has received the highest rainfall in the first week of July. Mandi has received 187 mm of rain, Kangra 145 mm, and Shimla 112 mm of rain.

Due to the rain, 32 roads are blocked across the state. Out of these, 19 roads have been blocked in Mandi alone. Roads have been blocked due to landslides at different places in Mandi. Apart from this, seven roads in Shimla—two each in Hamirpur and Kullu—have been blocked. The PWD has said that the roads will be restored soon. On the other hand, after the rain, transformers have stopped working at 39 places across the state.

Out of these, 36 transformers in Kullu and three in Chamba have stopped working.
