Shimla Mosque Controversy: Protestors on streets, demand demolition of illegal construction

Shimla: There is a ruckus over the construction of an ‘Illegal mosque’ in Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla. Local people along with people from various organizations are taking to the streets in the sub-city Sanjauli and Chaura Maidan to protest against the construction of the mosque which is termed as illegal. The protesters are demanding the demolition of the mosque.

People from different areas of the state are reaching this demonstration. Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh has also reached the demonstration site. Regarding the matter, Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has said that “action will be taken against anyone who takes the law into their own hands”. At the same time, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has attacked Congress Minister Anirudh Singh in this matter. Sharing a post on X, he wrote that “Minister Anirudh Singh in the Congress government in Himachal is speaking the language of BJP”.

Local people say that earlier there was a small mosque here and only two families lived there, but in a few years, a large number of people from outside have started coming. At the same time, the Imam of the mosque says that this mosque is from before 1947.

Actually, on Saturday evening, people of a particular community had beaten up a local person. The police have also arrested 6 accused in this case. After the assault, the matter started getting serious and now Hindu organizations and many local people are adamant on the demand to demolish this mosque which as per them is constructed illegally.
